WOW.
Great news for Hartford and the arts.
Over the last several months I've guided TheaterWorks, the company I founded over 23 years ago, in a dynamic investment of effort and resources to make our 233 Pearl Street facility an invigorating place for all of our friends.
We have painstakingly worked to revive this architectural gem, and to activate a completely reconfigured and restored Center Entrance, Main Lobby, and Gallery / Bistro.
From a grand canopy and new signage to a whimsical faux art foyer (overhung by a richly theatrical mural by John Defeo), we've made just “walking in the door” fun and engaging.
Audience check-in is now in the Main Lobby, where new lighting, foliage and our 1927 “Lion of Pearl Fountain” enhance the original Moorish Revival architecture of this unique landmark.
The Main Attraction(s).
TheaterWorks and New Britain Museum of American Art have joined forces to create a multi-component visual arts initiative in our historic downtown Hartford facility.
First, our Main Lobby is now home to major works from the Museum's collection. Off the southeast corner of the Main Lobby one discovers The Back Room, which contains changing exhibits from the Museum's staff and guest artists.
The highlight of TheaterWorks / NBMAA's joint initiative is the new Gallery of American Art, a unique combo Gallery / Bistro and Lounge.
In this wondrously intimate environment, which is free and open to the public, one will enjoy changing exhibitions from New Britain Museum of American Art, including some of the most exhilarating art to be seen. Delicious bistro cuisine and wine service from bin228 will complement the entire experience during the 90 minutes prior to all TheaterWorks' performances as well as during intermissions and post-show.
To C.A.P. things off, TheaterWorks' 233 Pearl Street landmark building, which we've owned and cherished since 1994, finally has the name and identity it deserves: City Arts on Pearl.
Above all, I hope that the joy of being together in this uplifting place may help make the exciting, challenging times we are living through better… because we've shared them with each other.
But right now, TheaterWorks needs the help of every audience member and friend we have to sustain our great work and to continue to do all we can for the community of which we're a part.

• Or be amazing. A gift of $2,300 or $23,000 (or anything in between) would be, well, amazing!
